The term "veteran" is used in the US to refer to people with experience in the armed forces. The most common use is for a past armed services personnel. A veteran is one who has served in the armed forces, but usually not someone who had a dishonorable discharge. It is especially applied to those who served for an entire career, but may be applied for people who has only worked 1 tour of duty.
